When a payment was approved for a previous month but the money was not received, it is important to first determine what happened to that particular payment. An approved status, a payment date, and an actual payment received in a bank account are three different stages of the payment process.
A missed payment does not automatically mean that the money will be added to the following month’s payment. Whether a previous payment can still be received depends on its status and what happened during the payment process.
An approved payment is not necessarily a completed payment
When a payment status shows Approved, it generally means that the beneficiary met the requirements for that particular month and was approved for payment. However, approval alone does not confirm that the money has already been transferred.
There may still be additional processing before the funds reach the selected payment method.
This is why it is important to look at the payment information for the specific month that was not received. If the status says approved but there is no indication that the payment was processed, the situation is different from one where the payment was processed but never appeared in the account.
What if there was no payment date?
Sometimes a payment can be approved without a payment date being displayed immediately. This means the payment has been approved, but the actual payment has not yet been scheduled or the date has not yet been made available.
If this happened in a previous month, check whether a payment date was eventually provided. If no date was ever shown, the payment may not have reached the final processing stage.
An approved status should therefore not be treated as confirmation that the money was deposited.
What if a payment date was provided but no money arrived?
This is a different situation.
If a payment date was provided but the money did not appear in the bank account, check the payment details for that month and confirm that the banking information was correct at the time.
Payments can fail to reach an account when banking details are incorrect, outdated, rejected during verification, or associated with an account that cannot receive the payment.
The account holder should also check the bank statement rather than relying only on an SMS notification or balance displayed on an ATM. Sometimes a transaction can take additional time to reflect after it has been processed.
What if the payment was processed but not received?
A payment that has been processed but is not visible in the intended account should be treated differently from a payment that was never processed.
First, verify the account details that were registered for the payment. If the account information was correct, check the bank statement for the relevant period and look for a deposit that may have been overlooked.
It is also useful to check whether the payment was sent to the correct payment method. If banking details were changed after the previous month’s payment was processed, the earlier payment may have been handled using the details that were valid at that time.
Does an unpaid payment automatically carry over?
One of the most common misunderstandings is that a missed payment will automatically be added to the next month’s payment.
This should not be assumed.
Monthly payment decisions are generally handled separately. Being approved for one month does not automatically mean that an unpaid amount from that month will be combined with the next month’s payment.
For example, if someone was approved for one month but did not receive the payment, and was subsequently approved again for the following month, the two approvals should not automatically be treated as one combined payment.
The previous payment needs to be checked separately to determine whether it was processed, failed, canceled, returned, or remains outstanding.
What if the payment was returned?
A payment can sometimes fail to reach its destination and be returned because of a problem with the receiving account or payment details.
If this occurs, the next step is usually to establish why the payment was returned and whether the payment information needs to be corrected.
Changing banking details does not necessarily mean that a previously failed payment will automatically be sent again. The status of the original payment should be checked first.
What if the status changed after approval?
Payment information can change during processing.
A payment that initially showed Approved may later display different information if there was a problem during payment processing. For this reason, it is useful to check the status for the exact month in which the payment was missed rather than relying on the current month’s status.
The current month’s approval does not explain what happened to an earlier month’s payment.
Check each month separately
If several months are involved, check them individually.
For example, suppose a person received a payment in January, was approved in February but did not receive the money, and was then approved again in March. The February payment should be investigated separately from the March payment.
Look at:
- The status for the unpaid month
- Whether a payment date was issued
- Whether the payment was processed
- Whether the banking details were correct
- Whether the payment was rejected, returned, or canceled
- Whether the money appeared in the bank account
- Whether the current month’s payment is a separate payment
This makes it easier to identify exactly where the problem occurred.
What should you do if an earlier payment is missing?
Start by checking the payment record for the month in question. Do not rely solely on the current month’s status.
If the payment was approved but never received, determine whether a payment date was issued. If a date was issued, establish whether the payment was actually processed.
If the payment was processed, review the receiving account and bank statement. If the payment failed or was returned, check whether the banking information needs to be corrected.
Where the available payment information does not explain what happened, the beneficiary should use the appropriate official support or enquiry channel and provide the details of the specific unpaid month.
